The wreck of the Bou Ferrer is about 2000 years old and lies just a couple of kms from the port of Villa Joyosa on the Costa Blanca in Spain at a depth of just 25m. This makes it a nice easy dive.
The archaeologists have excavated a trench across the centre of the boat.
They found that there were 3000 Amphorae in 4 layers which had been filled with a Fish Sauce which were being exported from Cadiz to Rome.
There were also a cargo of Lead Ingots.
Despite being so close to shore and at such a shallow depth the wreck is in very good condition. It is possible to see many intact amphorae (there are also a lot of broken ones) and to see the ingots with the markings showing their origins.
On the 18th August, the day before we visited, the archaeologists discovered a Roman coin which they have dated to AD76, which they think dates the wreck to the reign of the emperor Nero.
The dive site is only open to the public for 8 dives a year, so we were very lucky to get to dive this wreck.
